In October 2025, more than 8,300 Californians sent a message to Governor Gavin Newsom: an apology without action is not repair.

LIVE FREE USA helped lead a statewide campaign of faith leaders, descendants, and community advocates urging the governor to sign reparations bills addressing homeownership, racially motivated eminent domain, higher-education opportunity, genealogy infrastructure, and a bureau dedicated to descendants of American slavery.

Organizers used digital outreach, faith networks, community education, and direct action. On October 10, participants gathered in Sacramento and delivered the letters to the Governor’s Office. Every submission represented a person willing to put their name behind a broader vision of justice.

Reparations connect to LIVE FREE’s wider mission because the legacy of racial harm continues to shape housing, wealth, health, criminalization, and public safety. Repair is about changing the systems that determine whether families can thrive now and in the future.
