Public safety does not end when a shooting stops. Families still face grief, trauma, fear, financial strain, and the possibility of retaliation. LIVE FREE Illinois is helping build a response that treats healing as essential infrastructure.
Community Healing Resource Centers connect residents with trauma-informed support, outreach, community events, and trusted local organizations. In 2024, the centers engaged 11,562 people through healing activities and community outreach. Organizing also helped secure $3 million in state support for this work.
The approach recognizes that untreated trauma can spread across families and generations. A healing-centered response creates places where people can process harm, restore connection, and find practical support before another crisis occurs.
Illinois organizers have paired that care infrastructure with policy change, including stronger homicide-data transparency and reforms aimed at removing barriers to housing and work.
